The Canada Mauritius Trade and Investment Venture led its first exploratory business mission from Canada to Mauritius, January 12 to 15, 2026.

This mission brought together Canadian entrepreneurs, investors and institutional stakeholders for a series of structured engagements with government representatives, private-sector decision-makers and members of the Mauritian diaspora community. It was designed to move the Canada-Mauritius relationship from conversation to coordinated action.

Purpose and Scope

Participating delegates had direct access to Mauritian counterparts through site visits, sector briefings and facilitated introductions across both the public and private sectors. The mission provided the kind of structured, in-market exposure that is essential to building sustained bilateral engagement — far beyond what networking events or virtual meetings can achieve.

Key objectives included:

  • Establishing and deepening relationships with Mauritian government and business leaders
  • Identifying investment and partnership opportunities across priority sectors
  • Strengthening the visibility of the Canada-Mauritius corridor among institutional actors in both countries
  • Laying the groundwork for future commercial and diplomatic missions
  • Engaging the Mauritian diaspora community in Canada as an active bilateral bridge

Sectors in Focus

The mission explored opportunities across the sectors where Canada and Mauritius share the strongest complementary potential:

  • Financial services and investment — Mauritius is one of Africa's leading financial centres; Canadian institutions and investors are well-positioned to engage
  • Technology and digital transformation — Mauritian smart-island initiatives align with Canadian expertise in ICT and fintech
  • Renewable energy and sustainability — Mauritius has ambitious clean energy targets and seeks Canadian project development expertise
  • Education and professional development — strengthening student and institutional exchange pipelines
  • Tourism and hospitality — joint promotion and operator partnerships across both markets
  • Agri-business and food systems — an underexplored area with genuine bilateral potential

Why Now

Mauritius consistently ranks among the top business environments in Africa, with a competitive tax framework, a robust legal system, a skilled bilingual workforce and a deep network of trade agreements providing preferential access to African, Asian and European markets.

Canada, with its growing focus on diversifying global partnerships and deepening its engagement with the African continent, was increasingly looking to Mauritius as a strategic gateway into the Indian Ocean region. The timing was right — and the Venture set out to build the structure to make this connection durable.

Participation

The mission was limited to qualified participants. It was intended for senior business leaders, investors, institutional representatives and entrepreneurs with a serious interest in the Canada-Mauritius corridor.
